"A Boy Called Slow"
In the story, A Boy Called Slow, Joseph Bruchac tells the story of a young boy named Slow who earns the name Sitting Bull after showing bravery in battle.
As the story begins, we are introduced to the Returns Again family of the Hunkapapa band of Lakota Sioux. We learn that it is a tradition to name a child according to how the child acted. Because our main character moved so "slowly" in everything he did, he was given the name Slow. It wasn't until after he behaved in a heroic manner, at the age of thirteen, that he was given the legendary title of Sitting Bull.

Dear Mrs. Coro's Class
ReplyDeleteLakota Sioux Tribe members were named after they were born for their characteristics. If I were to denominate myself in the Lakota fashion, my name would be “She Who Does Much Reading,” because I love to read and sometimes read too much. I have read many books, both for children and adults, and enjoyed them immensely. Even though this would probably be my childhood name, I would hope to change it before becoming an adult.
Sincerely,
Taylor
Dear Mrs.Coro's Class,
ReplyDeleteIf I had a name based on my characteristics then I would probably have the strong, brave, and heroic name, Hungry Mouth.

Dear Mrs. Coro's class,
ReplyDeleteMy parents did not pick my name out of a book or name me after a relative. I was about to be Camryn but my mom didn't want Cami, Sammi, Jerry, and Carrie. So they picked the name Courtney.
Sincerely,
Courtney
Dear Mrs. Coro’s class,
ReplyDeleteMy name would probably be laughs-a lot. Some of you may not know, but I laugh at almost everything. One time I fell down the stairs and I got bruised all over my arm, and instead of crying I was actually laughing. After the incident my family thought I was crazy because I laughed instead of crying. And that’s why I would be called laughs-a lot.

Dear Mrs. Coro's Class,
ReplyDeleteIf I were to be named after my actions when I was a baby, my parent s would of named me Smiley Dwarf or Happy, like one of the seven dwarfs from Snow White. I asked them and they said this because I was small and always smiling.

2. My name was Jae won because all my ancestors' names started with "Jae" and my mom created Won.In Korea, "Won" means the "best"

Dear Mrs. Coro's class,
ReplyDeleteIf I had been named in the same manner as Slow, then I, without a doubt, would have been named: "Big Head"! In preschool, we had to put on an end of the year show wearing those little hats you see college graduates wearing on their last day (the black square ones). During the rehersal everything was going perfect, but on the actual day, it was so tight, it probably took me about ten minutes to get on! It was ridiculous!
Sincerely,

Dear Mrs. Coro's class,
ReplyDeleteIf I was named in the same manner as Slow, I would be called "Princess" because I loved princesses and wanted to be one when I was younger. I used to wear tiaras and gowns everywhere even to errands as simple as going to the cleaners to pick up our clothes. I'm even good at the princess-pageant wave.
Sincerely,
Mikaela R.
Dear Chaparral Fifth Grade Blog,
ReplyDeleteIf I were to be named after any of my characteristics, it would be my attitude towards life... Everything was a joke to me. I might also be named after my love for horses and animals. Horses and other animals have always been my favorite things in the world. One day I remember I went to a zoo when I was young and I was extremely disheartened that there were no horses! Also, I am strongly against Horse/Animal abuse and slaughter and one day I hope to be the person to stop slaughter!
Sincerely,
Horselover 2 (Jodie)
Dear Chaparral Fifth Grade Blog,
ReplyDeleteIf my name was based on the Lakota custom it would be "curious" or "counts a lot" because I always wanted to know about everything I saw and I counted everything I could. My parents only picked my name because they liked it.
Sincerely,
Isabel

ReplyDeleteIf I was named in a manner of how I was acting, my name would probably be Runner. When I was younger, I used to run away from my brother when I took a toy away from him. My brother would usually find me while I was using the toy. When he did, he would take the toy and start to brag about it and I would say, "It's just a toy."
Sincerely,
Cameron

ReplyDeleteI got my name for many reason's, but my parents alaways tell me about this one. They say I was named Bryan with a y because they were going to name me Ryan. So they just put a B in front and thats how my name turned up to be Bryan.
Sincerely

Dear 5th Grade Blog,
ReplyDeleteI was surprised to learn that my sister, Arielle, named me Danielle simply because it rhymed with her own name. Even though my fist name wasn't a tradition, my middle name was. My middle name, Sarah, was the name of my great great grandmother, and has been the middle name of the females on my mother's side ever since. That would mean that of course my mother, grandmother, and great grandmother's middle names are all Sarah.
Sincerely,
Danielle
Dear 5th Grade Blog,
ReplyDeleteI was supposed to be named after my great grandmother, Emma, but my dad liked Emily. My middle name, Anne, was picked because it was my mom's middle name too, so we both have the same initials.
Sincerely,
Emily
