Exploring the Wild Alaskan Tundra with the Grizzly Bear
This week we read The Grizzly Bear Family Book by Michio Hoshino, a wilderness photographer and adventure enthusiast. In this expository story, Michio Hoshino spends nearly a year in the Alaskan wilderness capturing the lives of grizzly bears throughout the seasons.
After reading the story together in class, we learned many interesting facts about the grizzly bear, Alaskan tundra, and the changing seasons.

Dear Mrs. Coro's class,
ReplyDeleteI learned four facts about bears that I never knew!
1-That bears don't want to fight which is extraordinary because I thought bears always want to fight!
2- That bears look for soap berries for at least 24/7 they may even not sleep.
3-Bears sleep under a ground den until it is spring.
4-Bears that are aggressive go to fast-moving rivers to catch salmon!
Thank you for teaching me 4 new facts about bears.
Sincerely
Rawmteen
Dear Mrs. Coro's class,
ReplyDeleteI see that you are reading a great story about grizzly bears. My husband is an outdoorsman and loves to go fishing up in Alaska. Last year, he was fishing on Kodiak Island...and so were the Kodiak bears! Both my husband and the bears were there for the salmon. Kodiak grizzlies are a subspecies of the grizzly and are the largest of the brown bears.
Mr. Yollis came to my class and talked with my students about his experience. There are photos of the bears and three videos he took. I thought you might find some of it interesting.

I'm enjoying following your blog! All of you are becoming great writers!

Dear Mrs. Coro's Class,
ReplyDeleteHere is a haiku about Soapberries.
Soapberries
Don't sound good to me
But bears love them, I suppose
That makes me wonder
I hope you enjoy it.
Sincerely,
Taylor
Dear Mrs. Coro's Class,
ReplyDeleteI choose to write a haiku about bears for my blog post.
Winter
The snow is falling,
the bears are sleeping in dens,
tiny cubs are born.

Dear Mrs. Coro’s Class,
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed reading The Grizzly Bear Family Book, and seeing some relationship to when I went on a cruise to Alaska. My family and I even saw a loose bear in a parking lot! From the book, I learned that grizzly bears mostly eat salmon and soapberries. Also, I would have thought that the bears would fight more often than walk away from another bear family, but it was interesting that the mother bear would be glad to take care of another mother’s cub. So, if you like nature or animals, I recommend you to read this book about a one year observation and grizzly bears as they are today.
Sincerely,
Bryan D.
Dear Mrs. Coro's class,
ReplyDeleteI chose to write a haiku about a den for my blog post.
Dens
Shelter for the bear,
tiny cubs are sleeping in,
snow outside is cold.
I hope you liked my haiku!
Sincerely,
Shana
Dear Mrs. Coro's class,
