Dear Mr. Henshaw

Author of the Week!
This week we read the story Dear Mr. Henshaw by Beverly Cleary. Our story is about a boy named Leigh who he has been corresponding with his favorite author for years because he dreams of being a writer. After winning Honorable Mentions in the school writing contest, Leigh is given an opportunity to meet a Famous Author. Although it's not Mr. Henshaw, Leigh is very excited to have lunch with a true writer!

Students are asked to share the following:
If given the opportunity to meet YOUR favorite author, who would you want to meet with and why? What 3 questions would you be interested in asking your favorite author?

    2. What inspired you to write the Chronicles of Narnia?
    3. If it were possible, would you like to visit Narnia?

    Sincerely,

If I could meet a famous author, it would be Jeff Kenny by far. First, I would ask him who Diary of a Whimpy Kid was based on. Second, I would like to know when he started writing books. Lastly, I would ask him if he had any tips on becoming an author.

    Sincerely,

    Michael

  10. Dear 5th Grade Blog,

If I had the chance to meet any famous author I would choose Lemony Snicket, the author of the tragic book series, The Series of Unfortunate Events. He is my favorite writer because of his strange but interesting stories about people he has met, and because he has a wild imagination. I recommend his books to all my friends because even though in each book he demands you throw the story away or not finish it, you won't want to. I wish there was a 14th book, but unfortunately the series has 13 books.

Because the book is very high level it may be a bit confusing,so I would ask Mr. Snicket the following questions. Are these books based on real events and characters? Is there really a Beatrice, and do you love her? Why did you write these books if you didn't want anyone to read them?

    Sincerely,
    Danielle

  11. Dear Lemony Snicket Fans,

You have tempted me into reading the first book in The Series of Unfortunate Events. After reading all of the comments, I am lead to believe that he is a mysterious, talented, and descriptive writer. I think it’s peculiar that he has never shown his face on his books. Not to mention, I also wonder why he warns readers to NOT finish his books. How odd!
I look forward to starting the series and being able to discuss the twisted plots with each of you.

    Sincerely,
    Mrs. Coro

  12. Dear Mrs.Coro’s class,
If I would pick an author, it would be Lemony Snicket. He is a good author because he is very descriptive and when it gets to a word that is a bit too hard, he includes the meaning too. I absolutely LOVE his books. So far, I’m on the 3rd book and I can’t pick which one I liked the most! That is how GOOD (and when I say good I mean good as professional) his books are. Anyways, the three questions I would ask Lemony are…….
    1. Who is Beatrice and why do you write a note to her at the beginning of every book?
    2. Why does a person HAVE TO die in every book?
    3. In the 1st book, how does Count Olaf escape?
    Sincerely,
    Shana

  15. Dear Mrs. Coro’s Class,

    If I were to choose a favorite author I would chose Jessica Burkhart, the author of the Canterwood Crest series. Jessica writes about kids in seventh grade who live at the best boarding school in Connecticut called Canterwood Crest Academy know for it’s prestigious riding team. I would recommend these books to many girls. Burkhart writes with humor and interest. If I were to ask her three questions they would be;

    1. Were you an equestrian growing up?
    2. Why did you choose to write books about kids in boarding schools?
    3. Is Sasha, Callie, Paige, Eric, Heather or any of the other Canterwood characters based on real people?

If I were to write to an author, it would be the Harry Potter series creator, J.K. Rowling. I chose her because I love the Harry Potter books, and if it wasn't for her, we wouldn't have them. Presuming that some day I get to meet her, here are a few questions I would like to ask her.

    (1) How did you get the idea to make Harry Potter?

    (2) Is anything in the story based on the real world?

    (3) Are you going to make a new series, other than Harry Potter?

All in all, if I were lucky enough to even have a few seconds to chat, that would be what I say.

    Sincerely,

  24. Dear Mrs.Coro's class,

There is one author that will always be the most descriptive, talented author. That author is Jessica Burkhart. Jessica Burkhart, at age 23, is the writer of the hit Canterwood Crest series books.

Canterwood Crest is about a few seventh graders that attend the prestigious boarding school that is known for its equestrian and academic excellence. The main character, Sasha, is part of the Youth Equestrian National Team. That is pretty much a step away from the olympics.

If I could ask Jessica a few questions, I would ask her these:

    1. Your descriptions are so informative and detailed, do you imagine yourself in that scene? Is that how you have such excellent descriptions?

    2. The horse's personalities are so unique. Are they based on horses in real life?

    3. What are some tips for aspiring young equestrians?

    Thanks for reading everyone,

    Horselover 2 (Jodie)

  27. Dear Mrs. Coro's class,
I’ve probably read thousands of books (literally), with hundreds of different authors, but if you had to ask me to name my all around favorite author, I would have to say Greg Mortenson, author of Three Cups of Tea and Stones into Schools. His books inspired me to start Pennies for Peace at school, and make we want to do more. Unfortunately, that is virtually impossible for a ten year old. In July of last year, I had the fantastic opportunity to go see Mr. Mortenson give a presentation on how he is building schools and advocating peace in war-torn Pakistan and Afghanistan. Even though his work inspires me more than his writing, Greg Mortenson is my favorite author.
    1. If you had not stumbled onto Korphe, do you think you would be where you are now?
    2. What do you like most about your work?
    3. What do you like most about writing?
    Sincerely,
    Taylor
