Spelling Bee 2010

Chaparral SPELLS $12,000
Worth of Words for HAITI!
By Ava & Aden

This year was the 3rd annual Chaparral Spelling Bee. The school decided to raised money for Haiti after the earthquake 2 weeks before. Each grade had their own spelling list, but I believe the fifth grade words were the most difficult. Here are a couple of the 5th grade spelling words: incomprehensible, contemptuous, lustrous, astonishment, and halfheartedly.
Other than the 5th grade, every other grade participated. Parents, grandparents, neighbors, and others pledged money for every word or test the student got correct. Everybody took the test on Tuesday, January 26, 2010. Prizes and awards for grades  1-5 were given on Friday, January 29, 2010. Everyone with a perfect score of 100% had their picture taken for the year book. Awards for the children in kindergarten were handed out and announced on February 1st.
Many students earned 100%, and the school raised $12,000.00 for Haiti. We are all proud and happy for raising money for such a great cause! This year's bee was a hit, and we hope to have an even better one next year!

  1. Dear 5th grade,

Wow, look at all the 5th graders who got 100% (including me)! I was really proud of the people who got 100% when I was looking at the pictures.

    Sincerely,
    Shana

  2. Dear 5th Grade,

Our names our Jackie, Eden, Bella, and Danielle and we are in the investment group JEBD. We have noticed that many stocks have moved up, down and even stayed the same. For example, we earned $16.70 on McDonald's when we lost $312.56 on Google. During the last week we lost $420.92. Unfortunately, we only have $23.27, but we have the whole year to grow, so by then we will probably have a lot more money. We have invested in Google, Apple, McDonald's, Wal-Mart, Target, Amazon.com, Pool Corporation, American Express, MasterCard, and Equinix. We have had a couple of great days where every stock was high and days where everything was low.

    Sincerely,
    JEBD Investment Group

  3. Dear Mrs. Coro,

I had a lot of fun learning and getting 100% on my spelling bee! My words were hard for my grade. (third) The most hard word for most people was probably independence, but for me it was volunteer. I got the u mixed up with the o.

    Sincerely,
    Ben

  4. Dear Mrs. Coro’s Class,
I think it’s an amazing event that we raised so much money just by spelling. If I went to a different school I would definitely tell them they should have spelling bees. Not only are they fun, but they can help raise money for charity, or like people in Haiti.
    Sincerely,
    Bryan D

  5. Dear Mrs. Coro's class,
My favorite persuasive essay is Sadaf's. I like her essay because, she writes awesome things about dogs that makes me want to have one of those cute, cuddly canines. Great job Sadaf!

    Sincerely,
    Neera

It was so fun doing the Spelling Bee! Most of the words in the Spelling Bee were challenging, but most of my classmates and I managed to get 100%.
